The City of Joburg is hosting a fun walk to extend the legacy of the Netball World Cup into Joburg and promote support for local netball teams, health clubs and runners alike.

 

Johannesburg, South Africa (06 July 2023) – The City of Johannesburg is hosting a 5km fun walk this weekend to help Joburg-based Netball World Cup enthusiasts give back to a cause. The city hopes to extend the legacy of the Netball World Cup in Johannesburg.

Mayoral Committee Member for Community Development in the City of Johannesburg, Councillor Lubabalo Magwentshu, has pledged his support for netball and women in sport by hosting the RUN/ WALK FOR FUN AND SUPPORT THE WORLD CUP NETBALL.

Runners, netball players, health clubs and families are invited to join the City on this day of fun in support of the players that will be participating in the world cup.

“We urge all Members of the Mayoral Committees, Community Development Section 79 Committee members, senior managers of entities and departments and staff in general in the City of Johannesburg and citizens to come out in their numbers with their families to run/walk with us as we rally behind the netball world cup, which is hosted in South Africa.

“After their run/walk, participants may to stay at the Zoo and enjoy time with their families for the rest of the day,” said MMC Magwentshu.

The RUN/ WALK FOR FUN AND SUPPORT NETBALL 2023 will take place at the Johannesburg Zoo on Saturday, 8 July 2023. Clubs and time runners will start at 7:30 and fun runners/walkers at 8:30 and have a choice of participating in 5km or 10km on the circle routes.

The total number of runners will be capped at 500 for the 7:30 session and 1 000 for the 8:30 fun runners/walkers’ session to minimise the impact on zoo animals.

The entry fee of R68 a person. It will allow runners/walkers to take part but also enjoy the rest of the day in the Johannesburg Zoo. The objective of the fun run is to put a spotlight on netball as a legacy programme for the Community Development Department and Sports Recreation in Joburg.
