In a heartwarming blend of adventure and compassion, Derek and James are tackling the gruelling Cape Epic mountain bike race to raise awareness and funds for a charity dedicated to sharing the therapeutic potential of sand.

Cape Town, South Africa (18 March 2025) – Father and son Derek and James have combined their love for adventure and charity by taking on the popular mountain bike stage race, the Cape Epic, all in support of Ukuthula Sandplay.

This journey marks a poignant full-circle moment for Derek, who rode in the inaugural Cape Epic 21 years ago, while his son James, who missed his dad during those early races, now joins him for what is likely Derek’s last Epic.

The Cape Epic Challenge is known as one of the toughest MTB Races out there, covering eight days, 608km and a climb of 1650m!

With Derek and James living in different provinces and working long hours, balancing training with their commitments has been challenging – especially for James, whose job doesn’t allow much flexibility for training.

Despite the challenges, they remained committed to their mission: to pedal for Ukuthula Sandplay.

Ukuthula Sandplay was registered as a non-profit organisation in 2022 after Sandplay research conducted in rural KwaZulu Natal revealed the incredible healing potential for both children and adults.

Sandplay, as a non-verbal, non-invasive, expressive, creative activity, is effective for internal processing and activating and supporting emotional and psychological healing.

This past Sunday, 16 March, the father-son duo geared up for what will likely go down as their most memorable cycling event yet. Yesterday, they completed stage 1 of the race, which proved to be a tough day out, in true Epic fashion.

Their dedication beautifully illustrates the power of family bonds and the desire to give back to the community.
