Daryl Impey earned his first Commonwealth Games medal yesterday; he placed second in the men’s road race with a time of 3hr 28min 29sec.

Birmingham, United Kingdom (08 August 2022) – Today is the final day of the Commonwealth Games, but before we look at what is happening today, we need to celebrate a Day 10 Silver medal win!

South Africa currently has seven gold, nine silver and eleven bronze medals at the time of writing this. On the medal tally list, South Africa is now 9th with a total of 27 medals. The new medal was earned by Daryl Impey in the Men’s Road Race.

Born 6 December 1984, he is a South African professional road cyclist. Impey is an all-rounder, generally coming to the fore on tough uphill sprints. He is one of South Africa’s Olympic cycling athletes. He has also flown the flag high during stages of the Tour de France, the world’s most famous road race.

In 2019, Impey became one of only two South Africans to win a stage at the Tour de France. He is also famous for being the first person to ever win back-to-back titles in the 2018 and 2019 Tour Down Under in Australia.

He may have missed out on competing at the 2022 Tour de France due to Covid-19, but he has bounced back with a Silver at the Commonwealth Games.

Impey finished the 160km road race in 3hr 28min 29sec. Leading the team most of the way was 26-year-old Morne van Niekerk, who only lost out on the podium when it came down to a final sprint for the finish. This is Impey’s first medal for Team South Africa, and he is very proud that he could do it at the age of 37.

Impey went on to commend the entire cycling team that took part in the race, crediting their support and pace despite being the smaller team on the day.

“Chuffed to pull off Silver yesterday for Team SA in the Commonwealth Games Mens Road Race. Super tough day out there but the boys rode incredible, always in the mix, never missing a beat.

Morne was just incredible support at the end and gave me every chance possible to go for the win. Nice to have the boys fully committed to the plan and pulling off a nice result in the end”
