A youth baseball team has been founded in Dunoon, Cape Town as a way to inspire youth and get them excited about the sport; they are called The Du Noon Dodgers.
Dunoon, South Africa (11 September 2023) – Baseball coach Jenni Muir took to her Facebook page recently to celebrate the news that one of her former players has launched a baseball team. Pumlani “Boss” Mnqokoyi has founded the Du Noon Dodgers and hopes to introduce the sport to the youth within the township.
Jenni shared her thoughts about how touch it can be to manage these sports but that her heart was so full in seeing it grow. She hopes that those who have the means, can help Boss set up his club dream.
“For many years I coached baseball, gave up time and lots of money and there were often days when I wondered if it was all worth it.
The long days, the travelling, hauling large amounts of kit around, cramming far too many kids in my car, the piles of uniform washing (still don’t know why baseball pants have to be white!), the tears and frustration, the standing in dusty windy fields, the bruises and the abuse. Was it worth it?
Then just the other day I get a message from one of the first players I coached who lives in Du Noon. He tells me that he is now going to start a baseball club in Du Noon (Du Noon Dodgers) and thanks me for getting him involved in baseball and for being his coach. Wow!
I cannot tell you how happy that makes me feel. The joy his message brought to me. I know it isn’t going to be easy for him, I know he will have his hands full and will want to throw in the towel but Boss, keep going because one day one of your players will write you the sweetest letter and thank you for your time and efforts and it will make it all worthwhile.
If anyone would like to assist Boss and the Du Noon Dodgers with equipment or finances, please get in touch with Pumlani Mnqokoyi here.
Boss swing for the fence!!”
Baseball has a very small footprint in South Africa but there are many people with dreams to get involved in the sport. We love sharing news about smaller sports and the big dreams they inspire.
