Young grade 9 Joshua Gerber has become a world champion after he made a record-smashing discus throw that’s got his school (and now, country) jumping with joy!
Menlo Park, South Africa (31 May 2024) — Joshua Gerber, a grade 9 from Hoërskool Menlopark has made his school jump with joy thanks to the kind of athletic achievement most only attain well after their early high school careers.
On 25 May at the McArthur Stadium in Potchefstroom as part of the NWU league, the young athlete threw a world-wowing distance of 47.02m with a discus weighing 1.75kg. It’s a remarkable achievement for any young athlete and one that reminds us how impressive our youngsters are. His school are certainly jumping with joy thanks to the throw that’s put their learner on the map, as is his country!
“We’re so incredibly proud of Joshua!” shares proud mom Hestie.
“Seeing him achieve his dream and break a world record is a moment we as parents will cherish forever,” she beams.
While the record still needs some time to reflect, it’s one that his school has wasted no time in sharing, commending both Joshua and the coaches who helped him shine in Potch.
Joshua adds another proud discus moment to South Africa’s repertoire for the month of May, with Simone Kruger having won gold for her in the Women’s Discus F38 event at the World Para Athletics Championships; breaking her own world record!
