After getting herself back in the saddle (quite literally) following a devastating fall, South African horse rider Heather Holland’s showjumping skills have landed her a big chance both for her career and the country.
Johannesburg, South Africa (30 April 2024)— Horse rider Heather Holland’s showjumping skills have landed her an incredible chance both for her career and for South Africa after she was selected to participate in a prestigious tour in France!
Heather says that the opportunity (pencilled for 14-23 June) is a ‘golden one’.
“I have been selected as the first South African rider to participate in the prestigious Global Amateur Tour. This program, renowned for its stringent selection process and commitment to excellence, represents a golden opportunity for riders worldwide to showcase their talent on an international stage,” says Heather.
But for the 23-year-old horse rider, it’s also the culmination of a lot more than just skill and dedication.
As a horse lover who has been immersed in the equestrian world for 15 years, Heather long believed that nothing could stop her from going after her dreams.
“My journey took an unexpected turn when a devastating fall shattered my tailbone disk and nearly broke my back,” she explains.
“It was a moment that could have ended my riding career.”
However, Heather shifted her perspective and found a place where she could still explore her love of horses, and make a difference all while gearing up to get back on the saddle.
“Instead of allowing the setback to define me, I redirected my focus toward a new passion: rehabilitating previously abused or neglected horses. These equine companions became more than just animals; they were my partners in a journey of healing and redemption.
“Together, we worked tirelessly to overcome past traumas and build a bond founded on trust and understanding. Through patience and perseverance, I transformed these once-mistreated creatures into confident, capable athletes.”
Through her dedication to these horses, Heather found herself competing once again and now at the point where she can take show the world that hope is alive as long as you fight for it.
Of the opportunity in France, Heather beams in saying that the significance of the moment is not lost on her.
“It’s a historic milestone for South African equestrianism, marking our entry onto the global stage with pride and determination.”
She is now calling on friends from the equestrian world and fellow dreamers to help get her to France, and you can check out her crowdfunding campaign here and keep up with her journey on TikTok via SassySteed.
