Khanyisa Chawane and Karla Pretorius are ready to build upon the team’s success and inspire a new generation of netball stars.

Johannesburg, South Africa (16 August 2024) – South African netball is on the rise of an exciting new era with the appointment of Khanyisa Chawane and Karla Pretorius as captain and vice-captain.

The announcement was made yesterday during a press conference in Sandton, Johannesburg and will see the dynamic duo lead the national squad to the 2027 Netball World Cup in Australia.

Chawane takes the reins as captain from the esteemed Bongiwe Msomi, who has led the team with distinction since 2016. Msomi’s captaincy was instrumental in guiding the Spar Proteas to the 2019 and 2023 Netball World Cups in Liverpool and Cape Town, respectively.

During the press conference, Chawane expressed that the announcement came as a surprise as she was a firm believer that in sports you have to work for everything and not expect things to be given to you.

“I’m privileged to be in this position today and I look at it as a privilege to be taking over from former captain Msomi. She started the legacy, and I was part of that legacy.

“I think it is a journey of continuing where she left off and I have to take it forward. But I’m excited for the opportunity,” Chawane shared.

Chawane’s boasts an impressive career. She was selected to represent the South African netball team at the 2019 Netball World Cup and the 2023 Netball World Cup hosted in South Africa. For the 2023 Telkom Netball League, she presented the Free State Crinums.

Chawane considers herself privileged and is excited to lead the group of skilled and dedicated netball athletes.

The Spar Proteas Squad is made up of:

  • Ine-Mari Venter,
  • Rolene Streutker,
  • Elmere van der Berg,
  • Kamogelo Maseko,
  • Owethu Ngubane,
  • Nichole Taljaard,

  • Tarle Mathe,
  • Jeante Strydom,
  • Jamie van Wyk,
  • Boitumelo Mahloko,
  • Karla Pretorius (vc),

  • and Ane Retief.

These talented athletes are poised to lead the Spar Proteas to new heights.
