Local motorsport is on the rise because we are seeing more South Africans on the international stage; Killarney International Raceway boosts local chances thanks to renewed lease.
Cape Town, South Africa (04 January 2023) – The profile of motorsport in South Africa is on the rise across all sporting codes. Over the last few years, international motorsport news has featured many rising stars and champions from South Africa.
As South Africa gets seen as a talented contender in the industry, our local infrastructure gets a shining light too.
Just last year a very serious conversation took place regarding hosting Formula One in South Africa. While the deal fell through, the hope for the future is strong! By developing world-class venues, South Africa is prime for hosting the best events known to motorsport fans.
One such venue is the Killarney International Raceway which has been operational for the last 75 years. The venue is home to the Western Cape’s top motorsport events and thanks to the City of Cape Town, it will continue to be so well past its 100th year!
The City of Cape Town renewed the longstanding lease with the Killarney International Raceway for another 30 years. This is set to boost the local economy and give up-and-coming motorsport stars the opportunity to compete.
Alderman James Vos, Mayoral Committee Member for Economic Growth, shared a statement in late December, highlighting why this venue’s continued success is important to Cape Town and South Africa as a whole.
“Motorsport at Killarney is a key component in making Cape Town Africa’s event capital, and therefore I’m happy to confirm that my department has finally signed the lease between the City and Killarney International Raceway operated by Western Province Motor Club.
“This secures the future of motorsport in Cape Town and paves the way for more investments and events boosting the economy.
“This decision will make our city the frontrunner when it comes to unlocking socio-economic benefits from property transactions. By firing on all cylinders I believe that this new lease gives Killarney the ability to to long-range planning and actively recruit key international motorsport events for the benefit of racing fans, the industry, Cape Town’s economy and the tourist destination.
“Motorsport contributes R357 million to the economy of Cape Town every year, while supporting an extensive industry and thousands of jobs in race manufacturing, trading, servicing, repairs, parts and accessories. It also draws international and South African competitors, fans, and sponsors to Cape Town who come for extended stays, spend and investments.”
The opportunities are endless for the motorsport community and we are sure this new lease has got a few hearts racing with excitement.
