Lifa Hlongwa has come a long way since being paralysed during a rugby match; today he flies the South African flag high and hopes to represent the country by rowing at the Paralympics.

South Africa (14 June 2023) – Lifa Hlongwa flew the South African flag high this past weekend at the 17th Gavirate International Para-Rowing Regatta in Italy. The talented young sports star earned himself 4th place in his final event. He is now gearing up for his chance at the Paralympic qualifiers which are taking place in Serbia, later this year.

Lifa Hlongwa has an inspiring story to share. When he was younger his life changed forever; he was playing at a club rugby match when a bad tackle left him paralysed from the chest down. It turned out he had dislocated and fractured a part of his spine. The injury was bad but with immediate treatment and physiotherapy, Lifa’s chances of walking again were high.

Lifa describes himself as a determined and stubborn young man, which he says played a major role in his rehabilitation process. He worked hard and before long, had regained the use of his arms, hands and legs. He needed to walk with support and while slower than he once was, he was moving again.

Today, Lifa uses crutches as his support when walking and through his rehabilitation, found a new sporting love for rowing. His talent for the sport earned him a full sports bursary to the University of Johannesburg where he has become a fierce competitor.

He has been training and competing ever since and hopes to make South Africa proud with his efforts. His dream is to be a South African Paralympian.

“Becoming disabled has afforded me the great privilege of learning to have a special understanding of the endless possibilities of the human spirit to overcome challenges. Helping motivate others to tap into their true potential in order to make a meaningful contribution to their lives and the world is an endeavour I wish to continuously embody and reflect in all my works.”

Rowing for South Africa

Since Lifa started competing, he has been working towards representing South Africa. He recently did so at the 17th Gavirate International Para-Rowing Regatta. He travelled to Italy with Rowing South Africa’s Para Coach Daniel Louw.

Lifa took part in two Regatta’s all in preparation for his big dream. On day one, he earned 4th place and qualified to go into the final race.

“Lifa gave it his all in the PR1 Men’s Single Scull heat and finished a fantastic 4th place with an impressive time of 10:29.30! His determination and unwavering spirit on the water truly showcased his incredible skills and dedication to the sport.”

The next day was just as competitive and Lifa continued his 4th place streak, earning the position in a few more races.

“After a fierce battle in the B Final, he secured an impressive 4th place, earning him an outstanding overall rank of 10th out of 15 exceptional entries.

But Lifa’s journey didn’t stop there! On Saturday afternoon, he fearlessly took on the heat, facing intense competition head-on. In a tight race where every second counted, he gave his absolute best and secured a remarkable 4th place.

As a result of his exceptional performance, Lifa has earned his spot in the highly anticipated B Final on Sunday morning! We couldn’t be prouder of his unwavering determination and the spirit he brings to the water.” – Rowing South Africa

With every upcoming race, Lifa will be able to adjust, learn and improve. We have every faith in his drive to make his dream a reality. Even now as he flies the South African flag, we cannot help but feel proud of where he has come from, where he is today and where he will still go.

The Para Rowing Foundation helped get Lifa to Italy so he could compete. Lifa took a moment yesterday to thank the organisation for all they have done for him.

“This is an amazing regatta to be a part of and sharing the course with the best in the world.

I just wanted to take the opportunity to thank everyone for their support and messages. As well as the Para Rowing Foundation for funding the tour and their support I really appreciate it.” – Lifa Hlongwe
