Made for More’s 2025 edition of the Wheelchair Challenge saw abled and differently-abled players hop into wheelchairs to try their hand at basketball while gaining insight into inclusivity.

Durban, South Africa (24 March 2025) – It was the most epic yet inspiring showdown as abled and differently-abled basketball players came together for a day of slam dunks, awareness and inclusion at Made for More’s Wheelchair Challenge on 14 March.

Good Things Guy got to touch base with Made for More’s General Manager, Anele Zama, who described the event as “amazing” and coinciding with International Wheelchair Day commemorations.

“We use March as mobility awareness month, creating awareness about accessibility, how we can understand wheelchair users better and create a better and adaptive environment for them,” Anele explains.

The Wheelchair Challenge saw able-bodied players attempt to shoot some hoops while sitting on wheelchairs and playing against teams with disabilities.

Beyond the squeaking of wheelchairs and high spirits, the sports day also offered players and supporters the opportunity to gain an understanding of the mobility challenges disabled people navigate and face on a daily basis.

“It is always a humbling experience and a reminder to realise that the things that seem so easy and that we do without even thinking twice, are not the same for wheelchair users if we do not make an effort to be inclusive.

“It is a reminder to think about others before yourself, to be more considerate and allow yourself to be constantly educated,” shared Anele, inspiring us all to experience the world beyond our own comforts.

The success of the event was made possible by sponsors, one of whose CEO spent the entire day in a wheelchair to gain a better understanding of what the life of a wheelchair user entails.

“The main aim of this event is to make us more aware, teach us how to help and raise funds for those who need it,” Anele adds.

The event not only provided hope as people from diverse backgrounds and abilities came together to learn and enjoy themselves, but it was also an awesome reminder that everyone’s got some greatness to offer!
