The MAD Leadership Foundation raised over R1,1 million to go towards scholarships all by running 1500km and cycling 1600kms.

Johannesburg, South Africa (17 November 2020) – From the 10th to the 17th of October 2020, 18 ordinary South Africans made an extraordinary impact when they ran 1500 km from Johannesburg to Cape Town, in a 24-hour relay designed to raise funds for disadvantaged scholars.

This adventure-for-a-cause is called MAD2Run and is founded on the belief that each person is called to be an active citizen and “make a difference” wherever they are. The only requirement? A big heart and a willingness to be a little MAD!

Beginning in 2014, this annual event had to make a detour in April 2020 as a result of COVID-19. Witnessing the devastating effects of the lockdown, these MAD athletes were more determined than ever to overcome any obstacles in their way as they raised funds for the scholars at the MAD Leadership Foundation. Through their experience they hope to become a shining light to those in the dark, restoring faith in humanity and re-igniting South Africa’s spirit.

The “Make A Difference Leadership Foundation” offers a full-investment scholarship that provides holistic educational support to academically-talented scholars who show promise but lack the necessary financial resources to effectively develop their potential. The foundation aims to create future leaders who will serve as inspiring role models and, ultimately, pay it forward by uplifting others in the future too. There are currently 286 South African scholars enrolled in the programme and the foundation aims to raise enough funds to uplift hundreds more.

Starting on the 10th of October, the MAD2Run athletes set off from Johannesburg and made their way through Kroonstad, Bloemfontein, Colesburg, Victoria West, Sutherland and Ceres, before reaching Cape Town on the 17th of October. Then, to prove how truly MAD they are, they participated in the Sanlam Cape Town Virtual Half Marathon on the 18th of October.

On Saturday the 14th November, this MAD2Run team along with their MAD2Ride counterparts (who rode 1600KM from the 29th February to 6th March) announced that they raised R1,1 million! Making a total contribution of R5,4million over 7 years to the MAD Leadership Foundation.

Step by step, stride for stride; MAD2Run and MAD2Ride are making a way for SA’s future leaders.
