Matthew Sates and Chad le Clos won two gold medals during the first day of the Swimming World Cup in Berlin; these gents are bringing it home.
Berlin, Germany (24 October 2022) – The 2022 FINA Swimming World Cup took place in Berlin over the weekend and South African athletes earned several gold medals. Chad le Clos and Matthew Sates have both earned gold and set the bar high for fellow competitors.
Swimming South Africa has been singing the athlete’s praises for their golds straight out of day one. Matthew Sates even has FINA talking about his success so early on in the competition.

Sates set the tone with a South African and African record in the men’s 400m freestyle in a fast 3:36,30. The previous South African time was held by Myles Brown at 3:37,91 which he set in 2013 and the African record was held by Oussama Mellouli at 3:36,75 set in 2008!
States walked away from the World Cup with four gold medals. Chad Le Clos earned the other two for his swims in the men’s 100m and 200m butterfly events. Both men earned a silver each as well.
Chad Le Clos made a career comeback this weekend after facing a few struggles and health problems. He was immensely proud of his performance.
South Africa held overall second place on the medal table, earning a total of eight during the Swimming World Cup. They earned six gold and two silver.
With the Berlin event now behind them, its on to Toronto, Canada, next weekend and finally Indianapolis, USA, on the 3-5 November.
