Maike Diekmann, the first Olympic rower from Namibia, glorifies her country through her zeal and passion.
Namibia (23 July 2021) – The ratio of women in global events like the Olympics is considerably low compared to that of men. Especially considering the economic situation at various places, investing in sports seems to be a tough job.
Breaking all stereotypes, Maike Diekmann from Namibia soars to success and etches her name on the Olympics, making her country proud.
She started with rowing, her curiosity about the sport too high for her not to try it. In the third year of her college studies at South Africa’s Rhodes University, she took the first step in trying out that sport.
That experience had been challenging but exhilarating at the same time to her. She decided to practice it whenever she could, and she did just that, owing to her love for that sport. It was new to her as she grew up in a place where she didn’t have any exposure to these kinds of sports.
After a few months of hard work, she managed to learn the sport pretty well, but it wasn’t enough to qualify at the 2015 African Olympics. Taking the rejection as a motivation to try harder, she propelled herself towards practising hard to continue her journey through the Olympics at Tokyo in June 2021. Her zeal towards the sport, hard work, and positive mindset has inspired many worldwide. She aims to grow higher in her field and participate again in the next Olympics hopefully.
