In these short five past years, Murray Loubser has evolved into the most innovative BMX street rider in South Africa. This is his story…
Western Cape, South Africa )02 November 2020) – A behind-the-scenes look at the coming to life of a magical BMX project. Meet South African rider Murray Loubser and get a no holds barred look at the creative team that brought this project to life.
Small town boy come good. Murray Loubser moved with his family from the big-city lights of Cape Town a few hours up the coast to the sleepy little village of Gansbaai. Known more for its Great White sharks and kelp beds (prolific seaweed that grows up to 10 metres long) than bike infrastructure, Gansbaai is not what you would call a hotbed of action sports talent. Yet it was here that Murray started riding BMX, learned to build ramps and honed the effortless style he’s become known for.

That was less than five years ago, and in these short past years, he has evolved into the most innovative BMX street rider in South Africa.
Meet the blond-haired youngster in the street though, and you’ll be greeted with an easy, unassuming smile and a genuinely humble demeanour – the kid has zero attitude and just wants to ride. What does he ride? Anything, really, from street, to dirt jumps and park. Although he’ll tell you that he’s not a park rider and doesn’t much care for competition he’s won various events including the coveted Ghetto Jam, Night Harvest and Ultimate X.
More recently he’s worked super hard on putting out good edits and clips.
From Europe to the USA and the sands of Namibia, wherever in the world Loubser has travelled to ride, he’s impressed the local top guns. As much with his riding bravado as his friendly demeanour.
Loubser credits Wayne Reiche – SA BMX legend, trail builder extraordinaire and photographer – as a mentor and believes he wouldn’t be where he is if it wasn’t for Reiche’s guidance.
“He’s influenced me a lot in my riding and always takes me to the spots and shows me around,” he says. “Wayne’s trail-building philosophies and riding ethics have rubbed off on me.”
When he’s not sessioning a big stair-set or rail somewhere, you can find him surfing the reef breaks around his hometown. Usually alone…
