Boasting skill and team spirit, the Madibaz Cheerleaders from Nelson Mandela University have earned a spot in the national championships.
East London, South Africa (09 September 2024) – If you’ve ever watched the American Bring It On cheerleading film series, you’ll know just how serious the cheerleading scene is, from the coordinated moves and the athleticism to the impressive somersaults in the air – it is a highly competitive and skilled sport.
Here in South Africa, the Nelson Mandela University’s Madibaz Cheerleaders proved their prowess by winning the provincial South African Majorette and Cheerleading Association (SAMCA) Competition in East London.
According to the university, the team’s outstanding performance at the SAMCA competition earned them a spot in the national championships at the end of September in Cape Town.
In the All-Girl Cheerleading Squad category, the Madibaz squad took first place, while Rhodes University secured second place. Additionally, the team demonstrated excellence in the CoEd category, earning another first-place position.
“This has been an incredible journey for our squad. We have put in a lot of hard work, and it’s amazing to see it pay off with such great results at the SAMCA Provincials competition,” said Rebone Chobane captain of the Madibaz Cheerleaders.
This achievement marks a significant milestone for the Madibaz Cheerleaders as they prepare to compete on a national stage later this month.
“We are excited and ready to represent Nelson Mandela University on a national level. We’re determined to give our best performance in Cape Town and continue making our university proud,” Chobane concluded.
