Despite the severe weather in the Western Cape, Olebogeng’s spirit did not waver as he hit the road on a massive mission to raise funds for preschool education packs:

South Africa (15 April 2024) — Earlier this month, Olebogeng Kgengwe set cycle on a massive mission to raise funds for preschool education packs.

With a 1,600km cycle ahead of him forecasting up to 20,000 metres of vertical ascent, Ole’s adventure planned to take him through Knysna before weaving through Sutherland, the Cederberg and Oudsthoorn from 6-13 April.

Beyond being a fantastic challenge for the athlete (who is no stranger to the demands of distances like this), the heart of the task lay in helping preschoolers from disadvantaged communities get a hand up with a little help in their educational development journeys.  Ole’s sights were set on 550 preschool education packs as part of the Knysna Education Trust’s preschool intervention programme.

Things did not go entirely according to plan for the cyclist, largely on account of the Western Cape’s fierce recent weather. Some days put everything on hold, and were much tougher than others. But some things also surpassed the plan! The fundraising target was surpassed well over the initial R38,500 goal, and a whopping R42,327 has been funded to date.

This means more education packs can go around, and the cycle days that didn’t work out, ended up paying off.

Ole reported check ins along the way, while those supporting him commended his incredible grit to push forward.

Thanks to his efforts, disadvantaged preschoolers will get to enjoy stationary, books, play items and the warmth that comes with knowing someone went far beyond the extra mile for them.
