Sixteen cyclists from the Pretoria South Lions Club recently embarked on a remarkable journey, participating in the 97km Ride Joburg to raise funds for Retina SA. United by their love for cycling and a desire to make a difference, they pedalled their way through the streets of Johannesburg, inspiring hope and spreading awareness about retinal conditions.
Johannesburg, South Africa (26 November 2024) – Athletes with a heart for those facing severe challenges with their sight got on their bicycles to ride for Retina South Africa at the world’s second-largest timed cycle race event, the 97km Ride Joburg.
It was a fantastic day of sun and fun, making new friends and raising much-needed funds for an organisation that does invaluable work in supporting patients with a wide range of retinal conditions.
Many a “GO LIONS” echoed through the streets of the concrete jungle along the cycling route as residents cheered the 16 cyclists from the Pretoria South Lions Club, which was represented by members, partners in service, friends of the Lions and senior riders of the academy team.
Together, they crossed the finish line, pedalled their hearts out, and turned hope into R66,000 for Retina SA!
The funds raised will directly support groundbreaking research in genetics, stem cells, artificial vision and other exciting fields that are fulfilling the dream of treatments for retinal genetic conditions such as Macular Dystrophy, Stargardt Dystrophy and Retinitis Pigmentosa, bringing hope to countless patients and their families.
“Every kilometre cycled by this compassionate group was a step towards better research, awareness, and support for children and adults with vision loss. Thank you for being true cycling heroes,” Retina SA said.
A huge well done to all those involved. Your determination and community spirit are helping restore hope and sight and remarkably transforming lives!
