Injured South African Deaf Rugby Association player Tashriq Parker and his family experience incredible support from the rugby community to navigate the difficult road ahead.

South Africa (12 August 2024) – South African Deaf Rugby Association (SADRA) player Tashriq Parker suffered a devastating injury during a recent test match against England. The player sustained a fractured skull, which will require him to undergo surgery and face a lengthy recovery period that will prevent him from working.

The accident occurred during the SADRA international Deaf rugby series, a historic event that brought together top teams from Australia, England, Japan, and South Africa from the 3rd to the 8th of August 2024.

New dad fights to recover and return home.

According to SADRA, Tashriq is currently in ICU at Netcare Gardens City and cannot wait to get home to Cape Town for his operation and the next steps of his recovery so his family can be by his side.

However, the timing of this injury couldn’t be more difficult, as Tashriq has recently become a new father who needs to support, bond and provide for his three-month-old baby girl, who was born prematurely.

The devoted dad is also a hardworking freelancer and will face unforeseen financial strain as he cannot work until he has recovered from the severe head injury.

England team raises funds for the injured opponent.

While Tashriq’s medical aid covers the initial costs of his treatment, the financial strain is far from over.

The road to recovery will be long and challenging, requiring ongoing support for lost income, medication, medical appointments, transportation, and daily living expenses. His family will also need assistance with travel and other necessities during this difficult time.

The flight from Johannesburg to Cape Town will also be challenging due to Tashriq’s serious injury.

To date, over R7,000 has been raised to aid Tashriq’s recovery, with a significant portion contributed by the England rugby team.

“The South African Deaf Rugby Association is grateful for all donations, sharing and outpouring of love,” shared SADRA Vice President Laren Terras.

With mounting medical expenses and the loss of income, Tashriq and his family welcome the support from the community.

SADRA appeals to the public to come together and help Tashriq and his family during this difficult time by donating to the Tashriq Parker Recovery Fund BackaBuddy campaign.
