Three South African athletes have been nominated for the IAAF World Athlete of the Year awards and South Africans need to start voting.
Wayde Van Niekerk, Caster Semenya and Luvo Manyonga have all been nominated for the IAAF World Athlete of the Year. Wayde Van Niekerk and Luvo Manyonga are in the running for male athlete of the year and Caster Semenya is in line for female athlete of the year.
The nominations consisted of 10 men and 10 women so having three South Africans involved is something to be celebrated!
“To have three athletes from the same country dominating outside the likes of the US, the UK, and Jamaica is something that needs to be celebrated,”
“We’ve got three massive people in track and field and it is only good for us to show our respects to the athletes and thank them for the past few years of hard work they have put in to be where they are today.” – Wayde Van Niekerk
The last South African to come home with the top title was world high jump champion Hestrie Cloete, in 2003. All three of the South African nominated athletes won gold in their respective events at this year’s World Championships in London.
Both Cater Semenya and Luvo Manyonga completed a full calendar year without losing a single competition.
Voting will open later this week and is as simple as ‘liking’ or ‘favouriting’ your athlete of choice. Each like will count as a vote and can be done on either Facebook or Twitter.
Let’s work together as a country and secure a double win for South Africa! We stand behind you Wayde, Luvo and Caster.
