After MLS shared footage of Mbekezeli Mbokazi’s debut for Chicago Fire, South Africans quickly flooded the comments with jokes, praise and pride.
Houston, USA (23 February 2026) – It only took one video clip for South Africans to find each other in the comments section. After Major League Soccer shared footage of Mbekezeli Mbokazi in action during Chicago Fire’s 2-1 defeat to Houston Dynamo, the replies quickly turned into a South African roll call. Filled with pride and jokes.
Mbekezeli made his MLS debut for Chicago Fire, starting the match and playing 88 minutes before being replaced by fellow South African Puso Dithejane, who also marked his first appearance for the club. The two became the latest South Africans to step onto the MLS stage.
The former Orlando Pirates defender wasted no time making his mark. Just minutes before halftime, Mbekezeli produced two crucial blocks in quick succession, first stretching to make a mid-air touch while facing the goal post. Then following it up with a headed clearance.
MLS posted the moment and South Africans took over in the comments.
Comparing his defensive performance to military level, one fan joked.
“He is the SANDF (South African National Defence Force).”
“I thought someone from South Africa posted the video,” another commented.
“Send the keeper on vacation already he’s got you covered!!!” wrote another supporter.
Puso Dithejane who recently joined from TS Galaxy, had only a few minutes on the pitch after replacing Mbekezeli late in the game. Just two young South Africans making their MLS debuts on the same night.
While the result didn’t go Chicago Fire’s way, the moment belonged to Mbekezeli Mbokazi and of course to the South Africans who showed up online.
