Sometimes our guardian angels work overtime to set us on the path of our destiny. After a previous setback, wheelchair basketball player Sphelele Dlamini has been given a second, “once-in-a-lifetime” opportunity to play professionally in France for 10 months.
Durban, South Africa (18 June 2025) – Some opportunities are once-in-a-lifetime experiences that, if not seized with both hands, can easily pass us by. This may hold true in many situations, but thankfully, not so much for Sphelele Dlamini.
The double amputee wheelchair basketball athlete from Durban has once again been offered a life-changing opportunity to play with CTH Lannion Basketball Club in France for 10 months. This comes after a previously unsuccessful fundraising attempt for a similar opportunity last year.
Now, he’s determined to finally make it to Europe and fully live out his purpose: to inspire others and support his family through the sport that fuels his passion.
“I love and enjoy basketball, it’s not just a game, but a way of life. Growing up and living with a disability has been most challenging for me. I’ve had limited access to many things and lost out on opportunities,” Sphelele tells us.
“This chance could be my stepping stone to becoming a professional athlete, enabling me to support my family, who currently rely on my disability grant.”
Sport has opened Sphelele’s eyes to a whole new world of possibilities and validated his potential to reach previously unimaginable heights.
As a role model for Jumping Kids, a charity helping children in need of prosthetics, Sphelele is not only driven by his passion for sports but also by the desire to make a positive impact.
“Playing for the CTH Lannion Basketball Club is a life-changing opportunity that will give me the chance to become a fully professional wheelchair basketball player and showcase South African sporting talent on the global stage,” he says.
With accommodation covered, the basketball player still needs assistance with other expenses, including flights, visa, travel insurance and daily living expenses while he’s abroad.

He’s now throwing the ball into the court of anyone who would be willing to help him realise his professional basketball dreams.
