Another Paris Olympics spot has been booked for Team South Africa thanks to champion archer Werner Potgieter, whose mastery of target earned him silver at the Africa Archery Championships!
Nabeul, Tunisia (16 November 2023) — Following the hockey hype surrounding both South Africa’s Men and Women’s teams qualifying for the 2024 Paris Olympics, another South African has hit his Olympics target — archer Werner Potgieter.
This after Werner’s podium-placing performance at the 13th Africa Archery Championships in Nabeul, Tunisia which ran from 8-12 November.
Werner, who has a history of being South Africa’s National Champion archer in 2017 and 2018, was part of a team of four excellent archers who represented South Africa at the Championships—Wian Roux, Morgan Blewett and Carien Whitehead.
Reminding people of his champion status, Werner ranked first in the Recurve Men division while the team won bronze. The champion archer then went on to win silver for the Championships overall, earning him his Olympic shot.
This also serves as a big comeback for the archer who experienced a few quiet years following COVID-19, per EWN.
The South African National Archery Association couldn’t be more proud of the ‘mission accomplished’ victory, especially considering the need for more support for archery.
May the odds be ever in his favour!
