South Africa’s junior national squad are set to compete at the World Rowing Championships in Canada; a dream come true for many of our young rowers!
South Africa (04 July 2024) — The national Under 19 South African Rowing Team (our junior squad) has rowed their way to a fantastic opportunity across the pond—competing at the World Rowing Championships in Canada!
It’s the kind of moment most young rowers only dare to dream about. But for the best-of-the-best young athletes who were handpicked to represent South Africa through a very tough, no-nonsense selection process that spanned months, it’s a dream that’s on the cusp of coming true.
A squad of 23 young rowers, both male and female, will join the likes of more seasoned South African rowing talents at the World Championships, including Howard and Matt Hayward, Chloe Cresswell, Murray Bales Smith and Nadia Gaspari—making the global event a mixed bag of experience levels and talent.
The task now is to afford the teams the opportunity they’ve worked so hard for, which is just around the corner in August.
As is the case for many sporting communities in our country, the rowing squad shares it is not in a position where the government is offering enough funding to make the mission possible.
While the team are immensely grateful for their sponsors and supporters, there are other costs including boat and blade rentals that are equally necessary and costly, and the team are currently looking for support via their crowdfunding campaign.
You can support their path to the World Rowing Championships (and hopefully to earning medals for our country!) here.
