Team South finished Special Olympics with 59 medals!
Johannesburg, South Africa – South Africa’s Special Olympics team brought home 59 medals from the Abu Dhabi 2019 Special Olympics World Summer Games!
The team of 71 determined and inspirational athletes left to compete against over 7 500 athletes from more than 190 countries on the 7th March 2019.
“Founded in 1991, Special Olympics South Africa is home to more than 45 000 talented athletes trained in 18 competitive sports. We provide year-round training for men, women and children with intellectual disabilities. Our goal is to transform their lives through the joy of sport, and to transform the lives of their families and communities.”
The team collected 35 gold medals, 12 silver medals, and 12 bronze medals!
Runner Kamogelo Moncho and swimmer David Coates quickly took the lead with a double Gold win each, while a number of their teammates also brought home double medals.
The Games act as a catalyst for inclusion, building a lasting legacy of improved health, education, and opportunities for people with intellectual disabilities long after the Closing Ceremony of the World Games.
Special Olympics South Africa CEO, Ancilla Smith, shared the successes of the South African team at the last World Games and thanks all attendees for their continued support, “We are eternally grateful to businesses and initiatives which support us, one being the National Lotteries Commission who have generously backed our team with funds for flights. We hope to raise further funds for the team through the “Adopt an Athlete Campaign” and hope to bring home even more medals than ever before”.
South Africa will be hoping to bring home even more medals in the next edition in Sweden in 2021.
