Byron Buys left spectators in tears when he stopped to hand his bicycle over to a fellow competitor whose chain had snapped on the final lap, a show of sportsmanship like no other.

Nelspruit, Mpumalanga – Marlese Nel Buys was moved to tears as she watched her son do the most selfless and kind thing.

Byron was taking part in a bicycle race. He was doing well but trailing just behind the top young sportsman of the race, Jovan. All of a sudden, Jovan’s bicycle chain broke, and he had to stop to check what the problem was.

Byron saw it all happen as he came cycling up behind Jovan. This was Byron’s chance; he could overtake Jovan and win… only he didn’t do that. Being a true sportsman, Byron stopped next to Jovan and offered his bike so Jovan could finish the race.

Jovan was grateful for the offer and accepted. Byron then picked up Jovan’s bicycle and pushed it to the finish line.

Everyone watching the race stood there with tears in their eyes. The moment was so pure and so genuine. Marlese shared the beautiful moment on Facebook along with a picture of the boys together after the race.

“Today I know, I’m raising a good kid. Last lap Jovan’s bike chain breaks (he rides much better than my child). Byron gets off, gives his bike to Jovan to get ready and comes running in with Jovan’s bike! Byrie, we were in tears! You have a very good heart! I love you very much.” – Marlese Nel Buys, Byron’s mother.

Byron showed that it isn’t winning that counts, its how you play the game. He gave it his all, but when it came down to it, he followed his heart and acted in kindness instead of being competitive.

His father, Timothy Buys, said Byron did the entire exchange without hesitating.

“Without any hesitation, thinking of consequences, or himself. Just how he is. Will give his last for friends or any who are in need. A sunshine every day. Always a beautiful smile. Thanks a lot. You an inspiration to all, even your for your family. Love you lots”
