The MultiChoice and SABC partnership opens access for all South Africans to enjoy Rugby World Cup matches, complemented by 8 dedicated ‘Fan Zones’ nationwide to support the Bokke, even in the face of load shedding.
Johannesburg, South Africa (08 September 2023) – In a groundbreaking move that has South Africans cheering with delight, MultiChoice has agreed to allow the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) to broadcast the 16 Rugby World Cup matches featuring our reigning champions, the Springboks.
This development means that all South Africans with a television and a connection to SABC will now have the opportunity to watch our beloved team in action on the world stage.
On the eve of the much-anticipated Rugby World Cup, MultiChoice announced its agreement in principle with SABC to sub-license broadcast rights for select matches. This harmonious partnership has been celebrated as a win for sports fans across the nation.
“We are pleased to have reached an arrangement with the SABC in the spirit of cooperation,” said Marc Jury, Chief Executive of MultiChoice SA.
This agreement came to fruition after the SABC accepted a proposal from MultiChoice on 18th August. The timing couldn’t have been better as fans eagerly anticipate the opening match between New Zealand and France at the Stade de France in Paris.
The broadcasting arrangement includes a total of 16 matches, spanning the opening ceremony, Springboks’ matches, two quarter-finals, one semi-final, the bronze final, the championship match, and the closing ceremony. Even if, by some twist of fate, the Springboks don’t advance to the knockout stages, MultiChoice has ensured that these matches will still be available for broadcast.
But the path to this agreement was not without its challenges. Minister of Sports, Arts, and Culture Zizi Kodwa stepped in to resolve a dispute between the two parties. The SABC faced difficulties in meeting MultiChoice’s reported R38-million demand for broadcast rights. Minister Kodwa engaged with Minister of Communications and Digital Technologies Mondli Gungubele, along with key SABC executives, including acting CEO Nada Wotshela, COO Ian Plaatjes, and Head of Sport Keletso Totlhanyo, to reach a solution.
This development marks a significant victory for inclusivity in sports. Previously, only approximately 1.3 million DStv subscribers in South Africa had access to these Rugby World Cup matches at home. Now, with a reliable power supply and a functioning television, South Africans, whether or not they have a DStv subscription, can enjoy the thrilling action on the field.
Eight Dedicated Fan Zones!
But the excitement doesn’t end there. SA Rugby, in partnership with some commercial sponsors, is set to create a festive atmosphere for fans across the country for all 48 matches over the next 51 days!
Eight of the biggest shopping malls in South Africa will be transformed into MTN Springbok Fan Malls. These dedicated fan zones, located in Gauteng, KZN, the Free State, and the Western Cape, will be adorned in the Springboks’ iconic green and gold. These Fan Malls promise an experience akin to being in a live stadium. Equipped with generators, they won’t be affected by load shedding, ensuring uninterrupted enjoyment of the matches. Fans can watch the games on massive screens, relish live entertainment, indulge in delicious food and beverages, and partake in professional punditry discussions.
The MTN Springbok Fan Malls provide an excellent opportunity for South Africans to come together, rally behind their favourite team, and soak in the rugby fever.
It’s not just about watching the game; it’s about being part of a collective celebration of South African sportsmanship and pride.
With the Rugby World Cup starting today, South Africa is buzzing with anticipation. Thanks to the collaboration between MultiChoice and SABC, and the creation of these exciting fan zones, every South African will have the chance to witness the Springboks in action, forging unforgettable memories and fostering a sense of unity and excitement throughout the nation.
Rugby fever has never been this electrifying!
