Team South Africa has earned another two medals at the Paralympics, taking the medal count to 5 and shooting the nation’s pride to the greatest heights.
Tokyo, Japan (01 September 2021) – It has been another great 24-hours for Team South Africa at the Paralympics in Tokyo. An additional 2 medals were won, adding another Gold to the count and South Africa’s first Bronze.
At the time of writing, South Africa’s new medal count is 5 in total, made up of 3 Gold, 1 Silver and 1 Bronze.
South Africa’s first gold medals were earned by Anruné Weyers and Ntando Mahlangu. Now the third has been earned by Pieter du Preez.
Pieter du Preez won the gold in 43min 49.41sec at the Fuji Speedway circuit. He had a hair-raising incident as he completed his first 8km loop. Another racer from a different race pulled out in front of du Preez and almost derailed his race. Thankfully he kept his wits and was able to avoid an accident. du Preez pushed on and crossed the finish line in a blaze of green and gold.
Sheryl James braved the rain to go forward and earn South Africa’s 5th medal win of the Paralympics. She will bring home our first bronze from her women’s 400m (T37) race. She ran a time of 1min 03.82sec.
There are many more opportunities for Team South Africa to add to our medal count, and we cannot wait to support them through it.
Stay tuned; we will keep you updated with any more medal wins we accomplish while the Paralympics is on.
