The Two Oceans Ultra Marathon is stunning, but boy, it will humble you! Comedic athletes Rory Petzer and Sipho Marima shared their hilarious takes on the 56km race, which had Rory feeling like his legs were about to give out at Constantia Nek, whereas Sipho gained a newfound appreciation for Vaseline!
Cape Town, South Africa (08 April 2025) – Running the Two Oceans Ultra Marathon is no joke! Or maybe it is… well, it’s funny-guys Rory Petzer and Sipho Marima have us confused after sharing their funny experiences learned from participating in the gruelling race this past weekend.
Although he completed the 56km race with a massive medal to show for it, Rory, in a video, said there was a lot to learn as a KZN runner navigating the unique challenges of Cape Town’s terrain.
He humorously marvelled at the smooth, pothole-free roads, and the breathtaking, yet challenging, Chappies. However, it was the infamous Constantia Nek that truly tested his mettle at around 46km.
“Let me tell you about Constantia Nek. It is the steepest, longest road in the whole world. The only way to walk Constantia Nek is that when you get there, you cut off 30cm of your one leg shorter to handle the camber, then you can run it normally,” the Durban comedian joked.
Rory was so humbled by that particular part of the marathon that he couldn’t help but compose a humorous song about it that expressed all the burn he felt with each step.
Meanwhile, Sipho Marima, a seasoned runner who sat out this year’s race, provided pre-race advice that went viral on Facebook.
With just the right amount of wit, he shared how runners should go to the toilet even if they didn’t feel the need to before the long run, have a good breakfast, and apply Vaseline everywhere!
“The first few kilometres are tempting,” Sipho warned.
“Hold back. 56km is too long. If you’re running with your training partner and they tired and if you’re chasing time – it’s okay to leave them behind. You’ll see them at the finish.”
“It’s very windy in Cape Town, don’t fight the wind, the wind will win. Your life is more important.”
And regarding Chapman’s Peak, he advised:
“When you’re climbing Chapman’s Peak, look to your left, and you’ll see that God exists,” emphasising the route’s stunning beauty!
Athletes and fans were thoroughly entertained by the comedic banter, which added a refreshing and light-hearted dimension to the traditionally intense marathon experience.
