A team of young South African baseball players are on the cusp of competing in the U15 World Cup—a huge win for the sport that’s still on the come-up in South Africa and the young dreamers!

South Africa (17 May 2024) — Several young South African baseball players are on the cusp of the opportunity of a lifetime thanks to their qualification and opportunity to compete in the World Baseball Softball Confederation (WBSC) U15 World Cup.

For fans of the sport that is still rising to popularity in South Africa, the value of an opportunity of this magnitude is a huge deal, and serves as another notch on South Africa’s belt in sporting talents.

The team selected (who recently struck gold at the National Baseball Championships) couldn’t be more thrilled at how much their hard work has paid off.

But, now the call is out for the larger South African community to back the young lads and get them to Barranquilla, Colombia for their shot at the big leagues.

Given that the majority of the team are based in Cape Town, a fundraising Golf Day is on the cards on home soil, at the Milnerton Golf Club on 30 May.

South African Baseball has shared that the team (20 players and 5 coaches) is seeking help in alleviating the financial burden of competing overseas; with sponsors and individuals alike invited to help make this shot a home run.

“Representing our country on the international stage is a dream come true for our talented young athletes, but it also comes with significant financial challenges. As is often the case with sports in South Africa, our team is entirely self-funded, with players coming from diverse backgrounds and facing various personal circumstances,” said the South African Baseball Union.

The costs they have budgeted for each player and coach are to the tune of R50,000—including visas, travel expenses, accommodation, uniforms and transportation.

“By supporting our team, you will not only be investing in the future of South African baseball but also making a meaningful difference on the lives of these young athletes, empowering them to pursue their dreams and aspirations,” the South African Baseball Union added.

Whether it’s attending the Golf Day, supporting the crowdfunding campaign or simply sharing positive words of encouragement on their social media, any and all support for these young baseball players is welcomed!
