The Grootbos Foundation is using rugby to build confidence, discipline, and hope for the future among young girls in the Western Cape community.

South Africa (17 September 2025)- In the Gansbaai community of the Western Cape, rugby is proving to be much more than a sport. At the Grootbos Foundation, young girls are gaining confidence, structure, and opportunities that extend beyond the rugby field.

What started as a programme with just 38 participants has grown to over 60, now including under-13 teams alongside under-14, under-16, and under-18 squads. Training takes place four times a week, providing a safe and supportive environment for girls to develop their skills, discipline, and self-confidence. For many, rugby offers an alternative to the challenges faced at home or in the community. This varies from financial hardships to family difficulties.

With the Springbok Women having wrapped up their World Cup campaign in stunning fashion with a quarter-final finish, it’s also worth noting that the strength and conditioning coach, Denver Augus, has worked with Springbok players like Aseza Hele and Maceala Samboya.

The programme also places strong emphasis on life skills and education. Coaches guide participants to link lessons from the field with everyday responsibilities, such as completing schoolwork, showing respect, and remaining committed to personal and team goals. By providing mentorship and a sense of belonging, the foundation helps children feel valued and capable of shaping their own future.

For girls who may not fit traditional sporting expectations, rugby has become transformative. Through the game, they can embrace their physical strength, build confidence during puberty, and channel their energy positively. Many also find support in rugby to cope with challenges at home, giving them a sense of empowerment and control over their own lives.

Some participants have progressed to provincial teams and return to mentor younger players, creating a cycle of inspiration and opportunity.

By combining sport, mentorship, and life skills, the Grootbos Foundation is providing more than rugby it is offering hope and potential for a brighter future. In a community where young people face significant social and economic challenges, programmes like this demonstrate how sport can be a powerful force for change.
