Germany is taking its famous Autobahn to a whole new level by making one for cyclists. You heard me. They’re on the way to build a 100km long super highway for bicycles only, and bike-lovers can already cycle the first five kilometers.
The highway will connect 10 western cities including Duisburg, Bochum and Hamm. It will be built along abandoned railroad tracks in Ruhr industrial region.
According to Martin Toennes of regional development group RVR, around 2 million people living in the area will be able to use this route, which should result in 50,000 cars less on the roads everyday.
Germany is opening the first 5 km of their bicycle highway
The 100 km highway will eventually connect 10 western cities
Parts of the road will be built on disused rail tracks
The highway will give access to easy commuting for about 2 million people
Hi, just to let you know, the top picture with the lage and the bridege is at the “Sylvenstein Lake” which is in Bavaria which has a lot of mountains. The Bicycle “Autobahn” is in the “Ruhrgebiet” about 650 km North, in an area where it is as flat as in Texas.
I know, because in the near of Dortmund I was born and in Bavaria I ride my motorcycle. The Bridge is one of the places where we take pictures all the time.
