Discover the joy of travelling locally in South Africa. From hidden small-town treasures to the big impact your trip has on local communities. Adventure and giving back, all in one journey.

South Africa (18 August 2025) – I used to think adventure meant airports and boarding passes. That you needed to cross a border to cross into something new. But the truth is, some of the best discoveries are waiting right under our noses, often down a dusty road, behind a padstal door, or tucked into a small town where everyone waves at passing cars.

Travelling locally isn’t just about saving on flights. It’s about unearthing hidden gems that make South Africa the colourful, complicated, beautiful place it is. The pancake stand run by three generations in a town with one stop street. The community art project transforming old walls into bright stories. The local guide who knows which hill gives you the sunrise of your life. These are treasures you don’t find in glossy brochures, but in conversations, in shared meals, in unexpected laughter.

And every kilometre spent exploring close to home does something bigger than filling our photo albums on Facebook. It fills pockets that keep small businesses alive, and sustains jobs in communities where tourism isn’t a luxury, it’s a lifeline. Your weekend escape to a coastal village isn’t just your escape; it’s school fees, it’s groceries, it’s a reason that the guesthouse opens its doors again next season.

Search for the deals; they are out there. Local tourism and small businesses are all trying to entice us into visiting.

Recent travels have made me feel proud to support local tourism spots. We have seen the harsh effects of the pandemic, which continue to affect small towns in South Africa. People have not bounced back as well as in the big cities. So my prompt for today is to go out there, explore and support the small towns. Stop for that coffee, shop that little store for locally produced gems or thrifted items. Book that slightly quirky B&B for an overnight or two.

That’s the magic of local travel: discovery and impact rolled into one. You leave with memories richer than souvenirs, and you leave behind something too: hope, dignity, and the means for someone else to keep building their story.

Because sometimes the best journeys don’t take us very far, but they do open our hearts and eyes to the beauty that is to behold in South Africa.
