Nelson Mandela Bay Executive Mayor

Nelson Mandela Bay’s new DA executive mayor Athol Trollip has clamped down on unnecessary spending but has started using the funds to create much needed jobs!

Mayor Trollip earlier this month issued an instruction prohibiting all business and first class domestic air travel for city officials and public representatives and banned the purchase of all luxury vehicles‚ saying money that might have been spent on costly cars will now be spent on improving service delivery.

Times Media reported that Trollip said that under previous administrations‚ an excessive amount of money had been spent on luxurious goods instead of on service delivery and that those days were now over.

“This government has made a promise to endeavour to secure R100 million in savings in our first 100 days‚ so that this can be redirected towards improving service delivery and growing the economy to create jobs.

“We are well on our way to achieving this‚” he added.

And now the mayor is putting his money where his mouth is. Trollip released a statement over the weekend announcing that he had created 229 new jobs for previously unemployed citizens.

The maths is simple… less government spending on luxuries will mean more money for government to offer jobs to the unemployed.

“Today we launched an Extended Public Works Programme that will see 229 previously unemployed residents working to clean storm water drains, gutters, canals and drainage systems across the Metro. This forms part of our ongoing effort to clean up the city.”

“Furthermore, we conducted oversight of road resurfacing and storm water refurbishment across Uitenhage and KwaNobuhle. Currently, there are over 25 roads being maintained or resurfaced across Nelson Mandela Bay, which is in line with our commitment to deliver better services.”

“We are a government at work and although we have a long way to go, we are certainly heading in the right direction.”

“Thank you for standing with us. Your support and encouragement will assist us in taking this Metro forward.”

  1. This is excellent news what the DA has done in Port Elizabeth. Now people have realized the change and by then the DA vote system will increase. The DA can easily get an outright majority at the end just like Midvaal.
