Siyasanga Majola’s tough circumstances as a teenager could’ve crushed her spirit. Instead, she took on an ‘I can do anything’ mindset that changed the trajectory of her life from struggle to bursary awardee, BComm grad and a brighter future.
Cape Town, South Africa (28 August 2023) — Today Siyasanga Majola is a professional powerhouse, former bursary awardee and the first female logistics manager of a big company in Cape Town. But years ago, she was just a young girl in the rural regions of Eshongwe and Vryheid in KZN, lumped with big circumstances for a young person.
Brought up by a single mother who doubled as a nurse and Siya’s role model, Siya’s life didn’t always have room for big dreams.
Self-described as “always an average performer at school,” hectic circumstances that could’ve crushed Siya were the same circumstances that gave her an incredible ‘I can do anything’ mindset.
Siya’s father had eventually come home; terminally ill with diabetes. The burden of care fell to the then 16-year-old Siya who was the eldest child in the house at the time.
“After my father passed away, I told myself: actually, I can do anything I put my mind to. So, I worked really hard for my end-of-high school exams.”
It was a turning point for the teenager. She stunned friends and family by matriculating with flying colours and accepting a study bursary to do a BCom Logistics Management at the University of Johannesburg without yet understanding what logistics was about.
Soon, she fell in love with the field and grew from strength to strength. Today, she is the first female manager of South Africa’s Epping Mill in Cape Town.
“I’m all about improving myself, professionally and personally,” she shares before admitting that (maybe one day) she might even like to go into government and lead the transformation of South Africa’s transport network.
