VulPro shared the story of a successful sting operation which led to the rescue of a vulture nestling that was being sold on Facebook; the nestling is now being raised by a pair of captive vultures.
North West, South Africa (08 September 2023) – The team at VulPro were alerted by a supporter, that someone was attempting to sell a vulture nestling on Facebook Marketplace. The seller was based in North West and had illegally removed the nestling from its nest. VulPro along with the North West Conservation Crime Unit were able to rescue the nestling and apprehend the seller.
“After we safely secured the nestling, the offender was arrested on the spot and is potentially facing a prison sentence of 10 years.
Thank you to the crime division at the North West Environment and Conservation department. Your efforts have truly contributed to ensuring the world is a safer place for vultures. VulPro is grateful to have the opportunity to work with your team and we look forward to the difference we will continue to make together.”
The nestling is a critically endangered African White-backed vulture. Thankfully, apon its rescue, it was successfully placed with a breeding pair that had a chick of their own, of the same age. The breeding pair accepted the nestling as their own and are now raising both nestlings.
“Well this little guy is doing so well and in fact, has joined another nestling his same age to become a twin. The wild and captive bred nestlings are two-peas in a pod and are being raised together to avoid human imprinting so both can be released when the time comes.
Who said vultures are not incredible birds! Which other species could you put another youngster in its brood or pack and expect the parents to raise them all with motherly love and heartfelt acceptance? Vultures truly show us the meaning of pure acceptance, peace and love.” – VulPro
The nestling will be raised by its adoptive parents and be released back into the wild once it is old enough.
