Keira King is a teenage hero who, on her own accord, has raised a significant amount for penguins present and future, with her powerful Paddling for Penguins mission!
KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa (29 September 2023) — At 16 years old, Durban native Keira King signed up for 40kms of Kindness, driven by her love for aquatic life. Her Paddling for Penguins initiative and commitment is both a reflection of her need to not fall into the ‘keyboard activist’ trap, as well as her desire to make a difference for the oceans she grew up exploring.
Not her first splash in making a difference, Keira raised R25 000 for the Two Oceans Aquariums’ turtle rehabilitation last year.
This year, she has almost doubled the amount of essential funds raised for aquatic friends with a current total of R44 051 set for the Southern African Foundation for the Conservation of Coastal Birds (SANCCOB).
Keira Embarked on her Paddling for Penguins mission in August, where she actually tackled 46kms.

“This was something that I will hold very close to my heart forever,” she said of the big paddle.
Her ultimate goal is R50 000, and with only a few thousand rand to go and over 90 days left to fundraise, we have full confidence that her paddle’s power will reach its goal!
The funds raised will make waves of difference for SANCCOB’s Chick Rearing Unit upgrade in Cape Town, where hatchlings are artificially incubated and released back into the wild after hatching. As the only organisation in the world to do this, SANCCOB and friends of the sea like Keira are greatly helping boost the African Penguin population—something we can all do a happy dance for.
