As the rainy season approaches, Durban’s Umbilo River is facing a critical plastic pollution crisis. The Litterboom Project is working hard to make a difference.
Durban, South Africa (22 August 2024) – The Litterboom Project team took action to tackle the huge task of clearing mountains of litter on the Umbilo River as they prepared for the rainy season.
Litter and pollution in rivers pose a significant threat to our ecosystems and communities. When waste, such as plastics, chemicals, and sewage, enters waterways, it can contaminate drinking water sources, harm aquatic life, and disrupt the delicate balance of ecosystems.
The Umbilo River flows through residential and industrial areas, as well as nature reserves, before eventually flowing into the ocean through the port of Durban.
“With the rainy season approaching, the first heavy rains could wash this pollution straight into Durban’s Harbour. We’ve brought in a few extra hands to help the Umbilo Team tackle the buildup, and prevent it from ending up in the harbour,” the Litterboom Project shared in a post.

The Umbilo Litterboom team has been working tirelessly to address river pollution, which is crucial for protecting public health, preserving biodiversity, and ensuring the sustainability of our water resources.
“It’s an everyday challenge as it keeps on coming but every bit we can intercept makes a difference.”
