Wandisile has bravely faced a devastating diagnosis of osteosarcoma, accepting the need for amputation with incredible courage. After learning about his challenging journey, Hot Cares stepped in to provide vital support with a high-quality prosthesis to ensure Wandisile’s mobility and chance at a fulfilling life.
Johannesburg, South Africa (15 January 2025) – At just 10 years old, a special boy named Wandisile has shown a level of courage that few children his age, and even older, possess.
In March last year, Wandisile began experiencing swelling in his leg. Initially, he received pain meds from a local clinic, but the swelling only got worse.
After numerous doctor visits and tests, a biopsy confirmed the diagnosis of osteosarcoma – a rare and aggressive form of bone cancer that, left untreated, can spread to the lungs and become almost impossible to treat. Fortunately for Wandisile, it was picked up quite early and hadn’t spread anywhere else in his body, his doctor confirmed.
According to Hot Cares, despite undergoing chemotherapy, the tumour did not respond to the treatment, leaving an above-the-knee amputation as the only option to save his life. A life-saving fate that Wandisile accepted with the bravest of hearts.
However, with state healthcare prosthetics often involving long waiting lists and ill-fitting designs, which could severely limit Wandisile’s mobility and quality of life, Hot Cares has stepped in to ensure he doesn’t just survive but thrives!
“We are covering the cost of a high-quality, custom-fitted prosthesis and the rehabilitation care he needs, valued at up to R100,000.
“This support will provide Wandisile with the mobility and independence essential for him to play, learn, and actively participate in his community,” the charity shared.
Beyond the physical benefits, this heartwarming intervention will help restore Wandisile’s confidence and self-esteem, empowering him to embrace life with hope and resilience.
“We are proud to be part of Wandisile’s journey, ensuring his life after surgery is not defined by limitations but by possibilities and a fulfilling future,” Hot Cares said.
