The African Penguin is teetering on the brink of extinction. To raise awareness and inspire action, SANCCOB urged everyone to “Wear Black and White” today in solidarity with these iconic seabirds.

Cape Town, South Africa (20 January 2025) – At SANCCOB, 2025 is the Year to Save the African Penguin! To celebrate this year’s Penguin Awareness Day, the organisation has decided to wear black and white today to shine a spotlight on the critically endangered seabird.

According to the marine conservation organisation, the African Penguin could be extinct in the wild by 2035 if more people don’t join the movement to protect this precious creature.

These birds face undeserved, life-threatening circumstances out in nature with populations declining rapidly due to limited food availability, forcing them to compete with commercial fisheries. Habitat destruction, oil spills and climate change are also contributing factors, affecting fish stocks and breeding sites.

Over and above wearing black and white, you can also join the movement to help protect these incredible seabirds by signing the petition to expand no-take fishing zones around key penguin colonies, donating to SANCCOB, volunteering or adopting a penguin or penguin egg.

Recently, the organisation reported rescuing 17 African Penguin eggs from the colonies after being abandoned by their parents.

“With your help, these eggs can have a chance at life. Your adoption supports SANCCOB’s mission to protect this critically endangered species,” appeals SANCCOB.

“Let’s show the world we stand united for African penguins! Together, we can make a difference!”

Together, we can make 2025 a year of hope, hatching new dreams and protecting this precious penguin!
