40 Early Childhood Development Centres in Langa have received much-needed upgrades for their classrooms and sanitation facilities.
Langa, South Africa (16 April 2025) — Langa’s Early Childhood Development Centres are at the heart of this story.
An initiative led by Rotary District 9350, along with global Rotary clubs, NGOs and local stakeholders, helped reshape the educational scene for young people in Langa.
It all began as a mission to upgrade sanitation and classroom spaces. However, the project quickly became more than a renovation rollout.
The people involved in the project were working closely with the principals of the ECD centres in question. This helped them understand the needs of the schools beyond ‘plumbing work’, and eventually led them to upgrade sanitation facilities and classrooms in 40 ECD centres. Beyond this, the schools were empowered in important ways to meet educational needs.
“Today, all these centres are either registered with the Department of Education or [are] in the process of being so. They now follow the specified curriculum and receive the same educational resources, giving children in Langa a stronger foundation for their future,” says Rotary District 9350 Governor, Stephan Young.
With the Department of Education on board, the Langa Forum of Early Childhood Development has also been established to help sustain the impact of the project.
Rotary District 9350 is in the midst of celebrating its 100-year milestone and has launched its ACT4IMPACT in honour of the celebrations.
ACT4IMPACT is a movement designed to inspire individuals of all ages to act and contribute to sustainable change, spotlighting the power of collaboration in addressing key community needs
