Durban teenagers Elihle Msomi and Sinazo Nzama are the proud innovators of the “Aqua Crusader”, an AI-powered aquatic robot that tackles plastic pollution in local rivers. It’s so impressive that their eco-friendly invention has already won prizes locally and is now headed to Sweden!

Durban, South Africa (13 August 2025) – In the heart of Adams Mission township in Durban, two innovative minds joined together to develop an AI-powered aquatic robot to tackle an increasingly concerning environmental issue they encounter almost daily: microplastics and nanoplastics in local rivers and the sea.

The Grade 11 Adams Mission College learners, Elihle Msomi and Sinazo Nzama, created the Aqua Crusader, which is a robot that effectively extracts pollutants from natural water bodies.

Their solution to plastic pollution is engineered with an eco-friendly, hydrodynamic design and camouflaged in dark blue paint that blends with the environment.

And if you’re curious about the advanced technology behind this nifty gadget, a Raspberry Pi and Arduino UNO R4 operate the Aqua Crusader. It uses ultrasonic sensors, GPS mapping, and real-time AI navigation to function without human intervention, according to the Stockholm Water Foundation.

It runs on solar panels, which work well even underwater, and hydro energy, making it an environmentally friendly operation. Its dual-chamber design separates the control system from a highly effective filtration system capable of capturing both MPs and NPs, ensuring minimal disruption to aquatic ecosystems.

Msomi and Nzama’s invention has earned praise in the science world, having won the provincial and national Stockholm Junior Water Foundation South African Youth Water Prize. These incredible achievements have now paved the way for the opportunity to represent South Africa in Sweden in the global competition for the People’s Choice Award, as shared by the SABC.

“We did this water project to solve South Africa’s water problems, and we are requesting South Africans to vote for us,” says Nzama.

“We are going to represent SA internationally, in the Stockholm Junior Water Prize. We need votes, and I call on South Africans to vote,” appeals Msomi.

These young minds are not just addressing a local issue; they are setting a remarkable example of how passion and ingenuity can create meaningful change.
