Every kennel at TEARS Animal Rescue is full. Behind those kennel doors are some of the gentlest and most patient souls, waiting for love.

Cape Town, South Africa (18 August 2025) – This August and September, as part of International Clear the Shelters Month, TEARS is shining a light on their ‘golden oldies’ and long-stay legends.

The dogs and cats who’ve waited longer than most for a place to belong.

August also marks the Universal Birthday for Shelter Dogs, a reminder that every one of these animals has a story, a name, and a birthday wish for a second chance.

Many rescues looking for homes are older, with greying snouts, wise eyes, and hearts big enough to love you for a lifetime.

“Senior pets are often passed over for younger, cuter animals. Some have waited months, others for years. But they still greet the world with cautious hope, ready for one last great love,” says TEARS spokesperson Tinka Shapiro.

These long-stay and senior rescues are worth every bit of love as their puppy counterparts.

The shelter is currently at full capacity. That says a lot about the kindness that comes from the TEARS team, in loving and caring for every rescue that enters its doors. It also says a lot about the urgent need for more families to step in and find their forever furkids.

Every adoption matters more than ever. For some of the dogs, that’s over 1,000 days waiting for a forever human, says Shapiro.

“Every adoption not only changes one life – it opens space for another dog in desperate need,” she adds.

If you’re tempted to take a step towards finding your doggy companion, book an appointment with TEARS. They’ll take you through the kennels, and it won’t be a challenge to find your match. An older dog might just become your new shadow, biscuit thief, and best friend.

To sweeten the deal, TEARS has teamed up with Chommies, who are offering 30% off your next online shop if you adopt a senior or long-stay animal from TEARS or any partner shelter.

To meet your future best friend, book an appointment at adoptions@tears.org.za or call 021 785 4482.
