Northwood Students Bring a Splash of Colour into Inanda Primary Classrooms

Over three days, a group of determined young artists patched and prepared walls before sketching and painting vibrant murals in the classrooms of Inanda Primary School, using their creativity to create vibrant learning spaces.

Durban, South Africa (28 August 2025) – Sometimes spreading goodness can be as simple as giving of your time to breathe new life into dull spaces. A talented group of Grade 9 Northwood High School students decided to use their creative and artistic skills for good when they reached out to Inanda Primary School to bring a splash of colour into its classrooms.

As part of the school’s Grade 9 Community Connect Week Outreach programme, the cohort of a dozen muralists set about patching and preparing the chosen classroom’s walls for bursts of colour and design.

Design teacher Nomusa Godoma explained that the initiative formed part of helping learners experience the joy of giving back and showing them how small acts of kindness can make a big difference in a community.

“A sense of community is at the heart of who we are. The Outreach Programme brings much-needed assistance to others in need of support. The mural-painting project, which took the “Young Squires” three days to complete, was just one of a range of community and environmental initiatives our Grade 9s undertook.”

The students themselves were deeply impacted by the experience. One of the artists, Joshua du Preez, described how the project had impacted him:

“The Outreach Programme is compulsory for all Grade 9s. I wasn’t sure what to expect, but all the fun of the cleaning, the preparing of the wall’s surface, then sketching the outlines of the designs, and finally painting in the bright colours was great fun.”

His fellow creative, Mark Quinton, added:

“We all know that our murals will bring such pleasure to the children who learn there.”

We can easily picture the bright eyes and wide smiles of the younger pupils as they first entered their lively classrooms.

Thembeka Gumede from the Domino Foundation, the go-between in putting the mural exercise together, expressed gratitude for Northwood’s efforts in creating a stimulating learning environment for the Inanda pupils.

The art students’ dedication and efforts just go to show that a little creativity and a willingness to give your time can transform a space and bring so much joy to others!
