Happy tears streamed when a little girl was reunited with her best friend.

Ketsell, Free State (15 September 2025) – At a recent outreach run by the Cluny Animal Trust, the team witnessed a moment that moved everybody to tears.

It started when a volunteer named Rozelle heard the sound of sobbing. A little girl named Didibe was heartbroken because she thought her family was giving her beloved dog Blacky away.

Blacky had been booked in for sterilisation, a routine operation to keep him healthy and safe. But to a young child, seeing him taken into a cage looked like goodbye forever. No amount of gentle explanation could convince her otherwise. Her dad apologised to the team and managed to take her home, still crying.

For children, animals often become their first best friends.

Dogs are playmates, protectors, and teachers of unconditional love, showing kids what it means to care for another life. It’s in these bonds that many children grow up learning compassion, trust, and responsibility. And for Didibe, Blacky clearly isn’t ‘just a dog,’ he is family.

Later that afternoon, when it was time to fetch Blacky, everything changed.

When Didibe caught her first glimpse of her best friend she sprinted ahead, desperate to reach him. She pushed past the team who was opening his cage, crying once again but this time from relief. Pure happy tears.

She wrapped Blacky in her arms and smothered him with kisses. He returned the love with a nuzzle, licks, and tail wags. The Cluny team, who do countless outreach projects across communities, said they had never seen a moment quite like it.

“Rozelle was in tears and so were most of the team, the love that she has for her dog was something they say they have never seen at any outreach, ever, and that is saying something as we do a lot of outreach work,” they shared.

Thanks to the outreach, supported by The Edgard & Cooper Foundation, Blacky got the care he needed, and Didibe got the happy ending she feared she’d lost.

A little girl’s tears turned to joy, and everyone there was reminded why this work matters!
