Nothing beats a fun day at the beach! For over twenty years, Breadline Africa has provided thousands of disadvantaged Western Cape children with the opportunity to experience the ocean for the very first time, turning dreams into reality and sparking their creativity along the way.
Western Cape, South Africa (18 September 2025) – There’s nothing quite like spending a day by the seaside, immersing yourself in the simple pleasures of salty air, sand between your toes, crashing waves, and maybe even catching glimpses of the marine wonders of the captivating blue waters.
For 25 years, Breadline Africa’s Seaside Outing has brought this joy to thousands of children, giving them the chance to see the ocean for the very first time and turning imagination into a magical reality. When they finally step on the sand, their laughter, wide-eyed wonder and squeals of joy say it all. Some build their first sandcastles, others brave the waves, while a few stand quietly in awe of the endless horizon.
Last year, 139 children, aged four to six, from Western Cape pre-schools enjoyed a day they will never forget. More than half had never seen the sea before. They collected shells, played beach games, shared scrumptious doughnuts and discovered a new world beneath the waves.
Parents spoke of the joy their children carried home, singing beach songs and dreaming new dreams. Teachers noted a rise in confidence and creativity. One little boy proudly announced he now wants to become a “marine animal teacher,” while others imagined being lifeguards, nurses, police officers, firefighters or even superheroes.
“Seeing the sea for the first time was like magic,” one parent said.
It just goes to show that the Seaside Outing is far more than just a trip to the beach. It restores a sense of wonder, expands horizons and creates memories that last a lifetime. For children growing up in communities where opportunities are scarce, a single day can plant seeds of hope and ambition for the future.
“Every year, when I see the smiles on the children’s faces as they discover the sea for the first time, it reminds me why the Seaside Outing is so special,” says Marion Wagner, CEO of Breadline Africa.
“This tradition has given thousands of little ones a day filled with laughter, discovery and new dreams for the future. Knowing that a simple day at the beach can open up a world of possibilities is the greatest reward of all.”
Since 1993, Breadline Africa has worked with communities to build brighter futures for children, from classrooms and kitchens to life-changing experiences, such as the Seaside Outing. But this is only possible with support.
This year’s Seaside Outing, marking its 25th anniversary, takes place from 18 to 21 November. It costs just R630 to give a child this unforgettable day.
You can help support the cause by:
- Sponsoring a full outing
- Contributing to the children’s transport, meals or learning activities
- Partnering with Breadline Africa as a company
However you become involved, you will be giving a child a day of seaside magic and memories that last forever.
