She broke her shoulder and was told she could never run a marathon. However, Lauren Moore is not one to give up without trying. One plate and nine screws later, she is gearing up to take on her first long-distance run for the Mdzananda Animal Clinic.
Cape Town, South Africa (26 September 2025) – In October, Lauren Moore will be taking on her very first full marathon, the Cape Town Sanlam Marathon. She isn’t just running to test her own limits, but to make a heartfelt difference for the animals of Khayelitsha.
Lauren’s journey leading to this marathon hasn’t been easy. After a devastating horse-riding accident in May, she was told that running a marathon might never be possible for her again.
“After entering the 2025 Cape Town Marathon, I had a horse riding accident in May, which led to a broken shoulder. One plate and nine screws later, I was able to start running again recently,” Lauren shares.
With the support and motivation from her loved ones and running crew, she has pushed through the odds to return to what has always been her best therapy. And she’s chosen to do it all for the animals who cannot speak for themselves.
“To keep me accountable in my training for this goal, I am aiming to raise money for Mdzananda Animal Clinic in Khayelitsha. I will also be running to honour the memory of my childhood friend Jonny, who we lost very suddenly in July.”
Lauren has adopted one dog and three cats from Mdzananda over the years so far, and is continuously inspired by the incredible work they do for the people and animals of the Khayelitsha community.
Every cent donated towards her run will go directly to Mdzananda Animal Clinic, helping the charity continue its lifesaving work, particularly after a difficult time recovering from an incident where a truck crashed into the animals’ operating room.

Your donation can save lives. An amount as little as R35 can cover deworming, R85 can provide a vaccination, R165 can feed one pet for a week, or R650 can cover one sterilisation.
Donations can be made to Lauren’s GivenGain page here.
