From Soweto to global stages, Khanyisile Mthetwa continues to redefine what it means to be a classical musician from Africa, having recently been named a Semi-Finalist at the prestigious Petrichor International Music Competition!
Johannesburg, South Africa (06 November 2025) – South African virtuoso flautist Khanyisile Mthetwa continues to raise the nation’s flag high on the global stage, having been named a Semi-Finalist at the Petrichor International Music Competition!
Mthetwa’s Contribution to Global Classical Music
The competition is a world-renowned platform celebrating musical excellence and innovation. Mthetwa’s distinction places her among some of the most exceptional artists and ensembles internationally, including the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra.
Her arresting, groundbreaking, and genre-defying debut album African Bird made a lasting impression on the Petrichor jury, setting her apart for its bold fusion of African identity, classical virtuosity, and social consciousness. The album has been praised by critics as “genre-defying and timeless,” affirming her status as one of Africa’s most visionary classical artists.
An Award-Winning Powerhouse
A two-time South African Music Award (SAMA) winner for Best Classical Album and Best Newcomer, Mthetwa also holds the Myrna Brown Scholarship from the National Flute Association of America, a historic achievement as its first African recipient.
She is the principal flautist of the Johannesburg Philharmonic Orchestra, a Mbokodo Award winner for leadership in the arts, and a passionate advocate for African composers and women in classical music. She was also named a voting member for the Grammy Academy.
“It’s an incredible honour to be recognised on an international stage alongside such phenomenal musicians,” says Mthetwa on her recent acheievement.
“This recognition reaffirms the power of South African artistry and the importance of telling our stories and power of women’s voices through classical music.”
