The dedicated team from the Lower South Coast SPCA recently brought vital veterinary care to the heart of the rural community of Fairview, bridging a financial gap for residents who may have little but pour their hearts into loving their pets.

Fairview, South Africa (19 November 2025) – Despite a cool, damp start to Saturday morning, pet owners in the rural community of Fairview just outside Umzumbe happily brought their pets to the SPCA’s outreach clinic to receive veterinary treatments.

Support for Pets and the People Who Love Them

The SPCA began their work at Sqalimfundo Crèche, where 28 dogs, several puppies, and even a rather indignant cat were compassionately and efficiently attended to. Animals received rabies vaccinations as well as treatment for ticks and fleas, deworming, and the care of minor wounds.

Two touching moments saw one lively pup brought in a Woolworths carrier bag while a trio of tiny puppies was safely carried in a Frontline hold-all bag – proof that when help is needed, owners make a plan to get their pets there.

The SPCA team, led by Tammy Nel from Lower South Coast SPCA, also compiled a list of animals whose owners requested sterilisation for their pets – a vital step in preventing unwanted litter and reducing suffering.

With the first rush of patients complete, the team moved inland to the Fairview Mission Hall. Initially, there was no sign of anyone, but word quickly spread, and soon dogs were arriving with their owners on foot and in cars and bakkies, eager for SPCA assistance.

In total, 70 dogs and a cat were vaccinated against rabies, a deadly yet preventable disease that kills numerous people annually, and nine pets were treated for wounds and sores.

“Usually we offer ‘doggy bags’ of food, but our food supplies are extremely low at the moment, and sadly we had none to spare,” said the SPCA’s Gail Roets.

Supporting SPCA Heroes

SPCAs across the country are, like most welfare organisations, under immense financial pressure. Each SPCA is established by its community and relies solely on the community for funding.

Larger financial donations are eligible for an 18A tax certificate on request. Including the SPCA of your choice in your will (it must be specifically named to prevent confusion over which SPCA is the beneficiary) is also a powerful way to continue supporting vulnerable animals long into the future.

Fairview is an area where people don’t have much money for themselves, let alone their animals, which is why the assistance of the SPCA is so vital. The Lower South Coast SPCA is currently appealing for support to continue its work helping animals in need.
