A viral Instagram video sums up the reality of Joburg’s (maybe even South Africa’s) summer: sunshine in the morning, thunderstorms by lunch.
Johannesburg, South Africa (26 November 2025) – If there’s one thing Johannesburg never runs out of, it’s surprises, and lately, the weather has been leading the charge. An Instagram video by Ryan Smith had South Africans laughing as the creator perfectly captured the daily drama that is Joburg’s summer climate: sunshine at 8 am, thunderstorms at 11 am, blazing heat at 1 pm and by 3 pm? Good luck, it might be hailing.
And honestly? He’s not wrong.
It’s that time of year when you wake up to a blue sky and warm breeze, thinking you’re set for a chilled summer’s day… only to find yourself running for shelter by lunchtime with dark clouds rolling in like they have been planning this all week. Then, just as quickly as the rain arrives, it disappears, leaving a gorgeous sunset as if nothing ever happened.
Classic Joburg.
Even though South African summers are known for rain, this year feels extra dramatic.
So, what’s the survival plan? When you leave the house in Joburg this week, dress for all four seasons.
Because here, a clear morning doesn’t guarantee anything.
