The six-time Ultra Marathon champion Gerda Steyn says earning her Blue Number stands out as one of the most meaningful moments of her journey.
Cape Town, South Africa (15 January 2026) – For Gerda Steyn, a runner whose name is already in the Totalsports Two Oceans Ultra Marathon history books, moments that matter most are not always measured by finish times or podium places. Instead, one of her proudest achievements has come in the form of a small blue number and everything it represents.
Gerda who is a six-time Two Oceans Ultra Marathon winner and multiple course-record holder, has officially earned her place in the prestigious Totalsports Two Oceans Marathon Blue Number Club (BNC). Her resume already places her among South Africa’s most successful distance runners, the recognition carries a deeply personal significance in her long-running relationship with the iconic race.
“Receiving my Blue Number at the Totalsports Two Oceans Marathon was my first ever permanent race number, so it was a huge honour.”
Gerda says this blue number motivates her to want to run the race a lot more.
“Not many people know that winning an event three times also qualifies you for a blue number. I would still like to run ten Totalsports Two Oceans Ultra Marathons, but receiving my Blue Number means that I am invested in the race in the same way as those who have completed it ten times or more.”
The Blue Number Club recognises runners who have shown extraordinary commitment to the event, whether through multiple finishes or repeated victories. For Gerda it symbolises something longer-lasting than a single result.
“Being part of the BNC reminds me that running is deeply rooted in me and that I am in it for the long term. It shows that I have held onto something for many years and didn’t give up when it got tough.”
Looking back, Steyn says her first Ultra Marathon victory in 2018 remains a defining moment.
“If I had to single out one, it would be crossing the finish line in first place for the very first time in 2018. It made me believe I could be a winner and showed me that my running could positively impact the community.”
Her admiration extends beyond elite athletes to the everyday runners who return year after year.
“They are the true heroes of the Two Oceans Marathon. They tell a story of decades of running through work, family, and life responsibilities.”
For those still chasing Blue Number Club status, her message encourages them to keep going.
“Don’t give up and never doubt your ability to achieve your goal. The BNC has a place for everyone, and the journey is filled with incredible, often life-changing moments.”
